Phosphate is a vital nutrient that algae requires to grow and reproduce. However, over time, phosphates can accumulate in ponds or lakes due to factors such as agricultural run-off, decomposition of organic matter like dead leaves, or the breakdown of algae.

To prevent algae from accessing these phosphates, the Oase SeDox adds reagents that react with phosphates, creating an insoluble mineral called apatite. As apatite cannot dissolve in water, it settles at the bottom of the water, becoming harmless and non-reactive sediment. The SeDox can remain effective for up to 6 weeks, depending on the amount of phosphates present, after which phosphates may begin to accumulate again unless treated at the source.

SeDox is particularly useful as a follow-up treatment to algae outbreaks since breaking down algae releases phosphates into the water. If these phosphates are not removed, they can encourage further algae outbreaks.
